# Remote monitoring platform

A scalable remote monitoring platform for climate-controlled chick transport, with a clear overview per role and a modern AWS architecture.

## Heering Portal — crystal-clear insight into climate-controlled transport

How do you keep hundreds of thousands of vulnerable day-old chicks in exactly the right climate-controlled conditions during a long journey around the world? And how do you give fleet managers and drivers a grip on that complex sensor data, without losing them in raw tables? Together with world leader Heering Holland we rebuilt Heering Portal: a scalable remote monitoring platform with a powerful, uncluttered user experience.

## An abundance of sensor data, but too little direct overview

## Challenge

Heering Holland is the international market leader in high-end transport solutions for the poultry sector. Their advanced trailers are equipped with On-Board Units (OBUs) that continuously transmit vital readings such as temperature, CO₂ levels, ventilation speeds and generator status.

The existing monitoring platform was hitting operational and technical limits. Almost all raw sensor data was shown on a single screen at once: interpreting deviations required deep technical knowledge, which made the dashboard hard to scan. Historical climate graphs did not work properly, so drivers and fleet managers could not easily compare or look back at data.

As soon as a trailer was powered down briefly — for example during a sea crossing — the trip was ended automatically. A complete journey was therefore split into disconnected fragments. The legacy architecture (ASP.NET and Microsoft SQL Server) and the authorisation layer also needed a refresh, so the platform could grow with Heering’s digital ambitions.

## From customer interviews to a modern cloud architecture

## Approach

In our Digital Lab we combine research-led UX design with robust software engineering. We approached the rebuild of Heering Portal iteratively and with users at the centre.

## UX research and customer interviews

We did not start by building. We went into the field. In-depth interviews with international fleet managers and quality managers — including at Aviagen — mapped the real use cases. A clear need emerged for three information levels: a fast fleet status (see at a glance which trailers are on the road and whether anything is off), detailed trip diagnostics for fleet managers on desktop, and action-oriented alerting with a next step for drivers and technicians on the move.

## Desktop-first dashboard and focused mobile screens

Based on those insights we redesigned Heering Portal around calm, clarity and usefulness. The desktop interface got an interactive fleet map with Google Maps integration and immediate colour coding when readings drift. Dynamic climate graphs let users analyse temperature, CO₂ values, flap positions and ventilation speeds in sync and in chronological order. Interrupted trips can be merged visually into one coherent transport report.

Desktop remains the home for deep analysis. In parallel we designed the key status and alarm screens specifically for mobile, including a direct link through to action protocols while on the road.

## A scalable AWS cloud architecture

In the build phase we rebuilt the platform from the ground up on a modern microservices architecture on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Sensor and measurement data are fetched dynamically through a dedicated API — in collaboration with Kleventa — while Heering Portal stays in charge of user management, authorisation and fleet configuration. The architecture is also prepared for future AI modules that automatically recognise patterns in trip history and flag interesting timestamps — such as sudden temperature changes — for quality audits.

## A future-proof platform that grows with the market

## Result

With the renewed Heering Portal, Heering Holland extends the physical quality of its trailers into the digital domain. Transport managers and hatcheries worldwide have 100% real-time visual insight into vital climate readings. Data is reduced to the essentials: no more noise, but targeted insights per role and device.

Trip reports and measurements can be exported quickly for quality checks on arrival at the farm. Under the hood, a secure, scalable AWS cloud environment is ready for future extensions such as Track & Trace and Exact/PDM integrations.
